Mal’cev Conditions from Graphs for Congruences and Tolerances

In [L4] we showed that, under certain conditions, a variety satisfies a given congruence identity if and only if it satisfies the same tolerance identity. Moreover, we mentioned that a parallel result holds for Mal’cev conditions arising from graphs. In the present note we give detailed definitions and state these more general results. The motivating example for our constructions is the followi...

Conditions for Robust Principal Component Analysis

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is the problem of finding a lowrank approximation to a matrix. It is a central problem in statistics, but it is sensitive to sparse errors with large magnitudes. Robust PCA addresses this problem by decomposing a matrix into the sum of a low-rank matrix and a sparse matrix, thereby separating out the sparse errors. This paper provides a background in robust PC...

GENERALIZED PRINCIPAL IDEAL THEOREM FOR MODULES

The Generalized Principal Ideal Theorem is one of the cornerstones of dimension theory for Noetherian rings. For an R-module M, we identify certain submodules of M that play a role analogous to that of prime ideals in the ring R. Using this definition, we extend the Generalized Principal Ideal Theorem to modules.

Convexity and optimality conditions for continuous time principal-agent problems

We present a simple convexity argument that clarifies the effectiveness and scope of Sannikov’s approach [S] to continuous time principal-agent problems. We in particular stress the importance of the appropriate concavity of the agent’s running payoff function as a function of his actions.

Sufficient Conditions under Which a Transitive System Is Chaotic

Let (X, T ) be a topologically transitive dynamical system. We show that if there is a subsystem (Y, T ) of (X, T ) such that (X×Y, T ×T ) is transitive, then (X, T ) is strongly chaotic in the sense of Li and Yorke. We then show that many of the known sufficient conditions in the literature, as well as a few new results, are corollaries of this statement. In fact the kind of chaotic behavior w...
